about
Kulning (2021) takes as its inspiration a style of singing employed by Scandinavian farmers known as kulning. Both intimate and mighty, these voices can be heard echoing around vast Nordic landscapes. Jonty Lefroy Watt's Kulning reflects on this image, this transient soundworld that is at once all-encompassing and immediately lost.
Performed on the viola by William Emery.
Premiered 17th June 2021 at the Holywell Music Room, Oxford.
